Elvis, Ginger, and Snookums are feeling much better after having surgery. Each of these dogs was in severe pain, suffering from intervertebral disc disease of the neck. This occurs when the disc that cushions the vertebrae in the spine is squeezed out of position and presses against the spinal cord. The condition is very painful and in severe cases may cause paralysis. Many dogs with disc disease can be managed with medication, but some dogs require surgical removal of the disc material to find relief. Dr. Larry Nafe performed surgery on all three of these dogs as he does weekly for many dogs with both neck and back disc disease. After eight weeks of rest and recovery at home, Elvis, Ginger and Snookums should return to their normal, happy lives.
